Freight broker programs, the four formats and who each one fits
Plural search, plural answer. Here is how the formats differ, what they cost, and which one fits your situation.
If you are searching plural, you are shopping. So this page compares formats instead of pitching one. What a single program should contain is broken down in the freight broker program guide.
The four formats
1. Self study video libraries. A few hundred dollars, sometimes free. You get lessons and nothing else. Fine if you are disciplined and only need vocabulary. The failure mode is that you finish the videos and still have nobody to call.
2. Community programs. Curriculum plus a place to ask questions and see other people at your stage. Usually one time in the low thousands, sometimes a subscription. The value is not the videos, it is that you can post a real problem on a Tuesday night and get an answer from someone who has hit it.
3. One to one coaching. Highest cost, usually several thousand and up. Worth it when you have a specific market, existing contacts, or an unusual lane profile and you need the plan built for that rather than for everyone.
4. Employer or agent programs. You broker under someone else's authority and split the margin. No bond, no filing, no startup cost, and no ownership either. Covered in freight agent training.
Side by side
| Format | Typical cost | Support | Fits who |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self study | $0 to $600 | None | Researchers, tight budget, high self discipline |
| Community program | $1,000 to $4,000 | Peers and instructor | Most people starting from zero |
| One to one coaching | $3,000 and up | Direct, scheduled | Existing contacts or a specific niche to attack |
| Agent under a brokerage | $0 up front | Varies by brokerage | Wants freight experience without ownership |
Whatever the format, the unavoidable costs sit outside it: the FMCSA filing fee, the annual premium on a $75,000 BMC-84 bond, process agents, and insurance. Full numbers in freight broker training cost.
How to compare two programs in ten minutes
- Ask each one what daily prospecting number they teach. If nobody says a number, they do not have a sales system. Ours is 30 to 50 calls a day to small and mid-size shippers doing roughly $5M to $100M in revenue, never Fortune 500, because a new MC number does not clear enterprise procurement.
- Ask whether the filing order is walked through, step by step, or just described.
- Ask what happens after you finish, and who answers a question at 9pm.
- Ask what they claim about timing. Three to six months to a first load is honest. Thirty days is a feeling being sold.
- Ask whether operations are covered: carrier vetting, rate confirmation language, margin math, and the payment terms gap.
Two out of five means it is a course. Five out of five means it is a program.
What none of them can do
No format issues authority, lowers the bond below $75,000, or promises income. The freight broker license guide covers what you file yourself, and no certificate substitutes for it, which is the whole point of the freight broker certification program guide.
Where we sit
The Brokerage Accelerator is the community program format, $1,950 one time, lifetime access, 500+ members. Setup and authority, then the sales system that gets a shipper to hand you a load, then the operations standard that protects the margin. Premium is $3,950 and adds direct time with Matt when you want the plan built around your own market.
We are not the cheapest option and we are not trying to be. If your budget is zero right now, start with the free training and come back when the paperwork money is saved.
Common questions
What types of freight broker programs are there?
Four formats: self study video libraries, community programs with support, one to one coaching, and agent programs where you broker under an existing brokerage's authority.
Which freight broker program format is best for a beginner?
For most people starting from zero, a community program wins, because the hard part is not information, it is having somewhere to ask a real question and staying on the phone past week two.
How much do freight broker programs cost?
Self study runs $0 to about $600, community programs typically $1,000 to $4,000, and coaching $3,000 and up. Ours is $1,950 for the Accelerator and $3,950 for Premium. Filing fees, bond premium, and insurance are separate costs in every case.
Are free freight broker programs good enough?
Free material is fine for vocabulary and for deciding whether you want this at all. It generally stops right where the money starts, which is the shipper conversation and the operations that keep your margin.
Do any freight broker programs guarantee income?
None can, and any that suggest a number are telling you something about themselves. What a program can do is give you the filing order, the call system, and the daily number, then hold you to it.
Want the whole system instead of the summary?
The Brokerage Accelerator is the full build, from authority paperwork to the call scripts that get you your first shipper. 500+ members inside.
